With the sportswriting biz well into its death spiral, old-timers waxed about the giants of olde if only to hear themselves talk.
FOLLOWING yesterday’s missive dedicated to Stephen A. Smith’s appearance at a sports-journalism conference, I offer you a chapter about the rest of the summit, a chapter that was cut from the original draft of How to Succeed in Sportswriting (without Really Trying). My editor at Audible, Susie Bright, made the call to drop the chapter and I didn’t second-guess her for a second … for fear that she might drop the whole shooting match. In the end the chapter was all heart and no fun, not really a fit with my usual light-hearted memories of humiliations. Just re-reading it reminds me just how scummy the newspaper business can be and how pissed off I was being big-footed and patronized by a sportswriting veteran. If I’m going to be deprecated, let me do it myself.
